Cliff Kerr: Odds & Ends

When
Wednesday, July 23rd, 8:30 pm

Where
Spectrum, 121 Ludlow St., New York [RSVP]

About the program
Drawing inspiration from sources as diverse as medieval dance and cutting-edge research in time series analysis, this eclectic performance will consist of several sets of short works for various chamber ensembles. Using a harmonic language influenced primarily by the post-tonal composers of the early 20th century, with particular emphasis on melodic and structural elements, each set of works is a vivid musical statement of a particular time, place, or concept. The "Four Songs" include settings of texts by Vladimir Nabokov and E. E. Cummings. The "Landscapes" are musical portraits of California's wilderness. "Entropic Invariants" uses a novel mathematical formalization of the definition of music as "organized sound" to produce pieces that occupy particular locations in entropy space. The program will close with a playful reinterpretation of the estampie, a style of courtly dance last in vogue more than seven centuries ago.
